O.M.G. Hello sun, where have you been? I missed you.

After a week of constant rain and high winds bringing floods to most of the country I’m glad we are back on track. I guess when global warming really kicks in I will look back on these entries and say ‘’what was I thinking’’, but for now I’m just happy it’s warming up a bit. A spokes person for the country’s water supply has said that the rain was still too little too late and we still have a hose-pipe ban in many areas which won’t be lifted until January. This has to be the wettest drought on record!

Big day for me tomorrow as it will mean I could be moving back to London in the very near future. There is nothing holding me on the coast anymore since the company I worked for folded earlier this year.

If the signs are right and I do get this opportunity I can’t begin to count the ways that things will improve.

Fingers crossed.

Rant

What the hell is going on?!!

This is particularly happening an awful lot on FB where someone wants you to REPOST a picture supporting some cause or another. ‘’Support our soldiers’’ or ‘’do you know someone who died of cancer’’ ….. it’s a great sentiment and I do my share of supporting in my own way, I don’t like the attention that comes with giving to a charity or the need for littering my page with the such. I think when they add ‘’lets see which of my friends will repost this’’ is disgusting, a form of emotional blackmail. If you don’t think I’m a friend then ‘un-friend me’!! This could also be likened to spamming a site, I wish they’d stop.

I wonder how many of these people would actually get off there arse and actually do something for these charities by way of joining an organisation or something? It’s very easy to hit that ‘share’ button and think you have accomplished something.

I can relate to this. There are times where myself and others have done things, specifically to just "boost" moral. But it was a short thing.

It's hard because with the fanpage I'm building, there is an aspect that you want viral... but you also don't want it to be "pushy". Sadly social media is a great way to get the word out, but as you point out, many don't follow through with actions from there. It is part of why we are looking at our primary fundraising through merchandise sales off the web site. I don't trust people to follow through, this way I get them and *BAM* donation made. ;) We'll see how well it actually plays out lol!

This bugs me too, there's a big difference in raising awareness about a problem or need and doing the post this or else crap! I never repost those as they just plain offend me. I much prefer to share funny posts or a joke/story. I also don't care for all the political posts that are all the rage these days, some of them are just plain nasty. State your political views but keep it honest and your views not just more of the party bs.

My agenda....

16:43 Apr 26 2012
Times Read: 730

The U.S.M.C has always been an enigma for me and why they stand so proud. So I was happy when I watched a film called Battle Cry, it wasn’t on the agenda but it was loosely based on the life of one of my favourite authors, Leon Uris, who also wrote the novel which the film is based on. It follows a group of men/boys from boot camp to combat.

I guess The US Marines’ agenda has changed somewhat since they were being trained for WW2. The film certainly shows why they are the pride of America.

Over the banister leans a face,

tenderly sweet beguiling.

While below her with tender grace

He watches the picture smiling.

A light burns dim in the hall below

Nobody sees them standing

Saying goodnight again, soft and low.

Halfway up to the landing.

Nobody, only those eyes of brown

Tender and full of meaning

Gaze on the...

Loveliest face in town

Over the banister leaning.

The London Marathon 2012

10:29 Apr 24 2012
Times Read: 742

The London Marathon was on Sunday which meant half of London was ‘coned’ off. They used over half a million cones to stop traffic filtering into the runners lanes and to mark out the route etc and a spokesman said that when they collect them after the race there are always a couple of hundred unaccounted for. I guess some people take them home as souvenirs but it still tickles me.

On a sadder note: the untimely death of the first female runner to die from the event will have her post mortem this week to ascertain exactly why this tragedy befell her. She died within a mile or so of the finishing line and by all accounts she was fit as a fiddle and had been doing charity work for years which included climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

On her FB she had (at the time of the race) raised £500 for her charity but when the news spread of her death the organisers were receiving donations of tens of thousands of pounds by the Monday.

I don’t know where this day has gone, it just came up and went by.

I have spent it doing not much at all. Rather than call it a wasted day as I did get a few things done too, I will say I spent it reflecting.

I have read a lot of journals on here and they have made me reflect a little more too.

One member had a surprise visit from her dad. She spent a little time just to write a sentence to that affect but you could feel the warmth and fondness. I hope my daughter will feel that way when she’s older and I come visiting.

Another member writes how she is dealing with a sponsorship deal. You can really see and feel the work that has gone into all this and I know she will be rewarded for her effort.

There are members writing about loves lost and won as well as being ill or conquering their fears.

I love reading journals and I sometimes wish I knew these members in real life.

From you have I been absent in the spring,

When proud pied April, dressed in all his trim,

Hath put a spirit of youth in every thing,

That heavy Saturn laughed and leapt with him.

Yet nor the lays of birds, nor the sweet smell

Of different flowers in odour and in hue,

Could make me any summer's story tell,

Or from their proud lap pluck them where they grew:

Nor did I wonder at the lily's white,

Nor praise the deep vermilion in the rose;

They were but sweet, but figures of delight,

Drawn after you, you pattern of all those.

Yet seemed it winter still, and you away,

As with your shadow I with these did play.

Sorry America. Found on FB, had to share here. Please remember this is tongue in cheek and just a bit of fun. If you don't have a sense of humour please stop reading.

To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.

(You should look up 'revocation' in the Oxford English Dictionary.)

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas, which she does not fancy).

Your new Prime Minister, David Cameron , will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'colour,' 'favour,' 'labour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix '-ize' will be replaced by the suffix '-ise.' Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up 'vocabulary').

2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ''like' and 'you know' is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter 'u'' and the elimination of '-ize.'

3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can't sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you're not ready to shoot grouse.

5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.

8. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

11. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside ofAmerica. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

13. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen!

In view of this I have been listening to a lot of music over the weekend and three albums have stood out. The first was Jeff Waynes’ War of the Worlds, with the unmistakable voice of Richard Burton as he narrates. The second was the waltz’s of Johann Strauss Jr and thirdly the new version of Pink Floyds’ The Wall which was live and called ‘Watching the World Upon the Wall’.

Cure for Old Age Discovered in 1951

Among the "20 Things You Didn't Know About... Death" in the current issue of Discover were these two things I didn't know about death.

1. No American has died of old age since 1951.

2. That was the year the government eliminated that classification on death certificates.

A more complete explanation may be found in Leonard Hayflick's 2002 essay titled, "Has Anyone Ever Died of Old Age?"

The cure resulted from a Public Health Conference on Records and Statistics in which all state and federal agencies were ordered to adopt a standard list of 130 contributing and underlying causes of death. In 1951, the list deleted a cause of death attributed to “old age.”

Thus, with a single stroke of a typewriter key, old age was cured as a cause of death in the States.

The forecast said it was going to be overcast and very windy with rain moving in blab bla bla, a typical spring day. I dressed for the occasion with hat, scarf and all the trimmings. Poop bags for the dog, mp3 player, you name it, I was ready.

The weather was the most glorious day ever, most of what I brought was left in the car as I pulled up to the park.

With all this technology you’d think we could predict the days weather by now. This was not a ten day forecast that might have been affected by mother nature it was for the day, ‘today’!

Anyway, back home for lunch now.

The Passover begins on the sunset of Good Friday, it’s been ages since the two dates have fallen this way and I’m glad for it. Because of my ‘non working’ status I have been roped into helping this year in the distribution of food parcels and I may add that I am fine with this.

Passover is traditionally a time when charities get busy to help the needy and it’s done in a dignified way. I normally give a donation and put my feet up and assume that ‘my bit’ is done. Usually I don’t spare a thought for all those volunteers that go out in all sorts of weather and give up their time and energy to help. This year I will be driving, schlepping and talking to people first hand.

Here’s the thing, if I don’t get a job soon it could be I that is considered needy.

Whatever charity you are linked to … I thank you.
